April 26, 2011 Since 2008, with the establishment of the Independent Party, all the voters in Watertown-Oakville have had the opportunity to participate in town government. Before then, only those who registered with the Republican or Democratic Parties were considered eligible to run for office or to be appointed to boards and commissions. The majority of voters who were registered Unaffiliated were completely shut out of the ability to serve in an office or on a board or commission. It didn’t have to be that way, but it was. One had to have – or pretend to have – a loyalty to a political party to be considered eligible. Now we have a game changer in town: The Independent Party. Any registered voter is eligible to run on the Independent Party ticket for elective office or to be considered for appointment to boards and commissions. We don’t demand loyalty to the Party. We do demand loyalty to the philosophy that defines our existence. A philosophy that stresses honesty, integrity, and transparency. The Republicans and Democrats are pretty upset with us. Their history of trying to enforce control by their Town Committees has been brought out of the shadows and is now facing serious competition.
